The Future of U.S. Public Transportation

Shifting towards technology through mobility and infrastructure.

Based on documents by Louis Thompson's "Public Transportation in the U.S.: History and Current Status" and Seven Poltzin "Future of U.S. Public Transportation", several models were created over 7 weeks to develop a holistic understanding of transportation in the United States. Since the end of WWII, the US has gone through a series of changes prompted by affordability and needs for intercity travel. As gas prices decreased and personal income increased, individuals were able to afford private vehicles. However, as the cost of vehicle ownership has increased, there are individuals who have chosen to be carless by choice. In response, alternative modes of transportation like Lyft and Uber has risen, providing alternative means of traveling for individuals without a vehicles -- competing with services like buses and subways. In order to maintain ridership, the US must continue to invest in its transportation infrastructure and understand the path of future development.
